DVD playback - chapter support

I am trying to rip some dvds that I own in order to play back with chapters.

I used dvdfab and did a whole dvd rip, think to vob. but when you do that it creates a different file for each chapter. is that what I should be doing?

when I refreshed media it didn't seem to show the dvd at all but that may have been because I was two levels deep in directories.

I am using the extender but at this point I am assuming the issue is in how I rip dvds and that would be the same regardless of where I play back?

When you create a dvd, you will get 3 types of files: IFO, BUP, and VOB. These get placed in a folder called VIDEO_TS. There is usually a second folder called AUDIO_TS, but it is not used for video DVDs (it is intended for audio DVDs that were supposed to be like higher quality CDs).

The VOB files contain all of the audio and video in an MPEG format along with menus. To be compliant with the DVD standards, a VOB file cannot be larger than 1GB, so for larger videos, they must be broken up. The breaks can occur anywhere - they don't have to be at the ends of chapters, they just must result in VOB files that are 1GB or smaller. The menus are usually in their own VOB files. If you exceed the 1GB limit, some players will have problems playing the video back (including the current versions of Sage for Windows).

THE IFO file contains all of the playback instructions in a proprietary format. This is how the DVD player knows where the chapters begin and end, and what parts are stored in which VOB files.

The BUP files are backups of the IFO files, so the disc may still be playable if there is a scratch or something that damages the IFO file.

I'm not sure why you are having trouble seeing the videos in Sage, that is a different question...

No, it should be ripping the movie just like it was on the disc. Or at most, removing extras and menus. DVD Shrink is the only program I'm aware of that can successfully extract just the movie from a DVD.
