Assign Recording to specific folder?

I was asked this question by a BTV user looking at SageTV and I think I know the answer but thought I'd throw it out there to confirm.

Is there a way to specify by recording what folder you want that recording to be stored? For instance if I want all recordings of "one life to live" and "general hospital" for my wife to go to a recording folder named "Soaps" and all my shows to go to a folder named "Quality" can you do it in SageTV?

This is something that BeyondTV does quite nicely and can be a good way to segregate recordings by user for example.

This is set in the Detailed Setup menu; first item in the General section.

No, you can't assign specific shows to specific recording directories.

Thanks for the response.
Is there a proper channel to add this as a feature request other than posting this?

You can use the bug report form to submit feature requests. Not much chance of getting new features added this late in the Beta cycle, but that is the official channel.

That said, third-party plugins such as Sage Job Queue should be able to sort recordings into folders after they're done recording.

Thanks Brent/all. I have filed the "bug report"/feature request, and put it on my list of things that have to be done before migrating.

Greg - why the requirement? What kind of setup/need do you have such that shows need to be sorted to folders as they're recorded?

As HD becomes more prevelent, it might make sense to add this feature.
I have 6 HD tuners and occasionally they are all recording. I also have 4 extender/clients and have had times where most of them were being used during this time. This is the only time I have ever had any playback stuttering. It might also help with comm detection to span multiple drives as HDD IO seems to be the bottleneck.
I plan on buying a WD Raptor but would prefer to breakup the recordings to multiple drives rather than spend the $$$...
I know you can record to multiple drives now but only based on free space. It would be nice to have more control on how/when it records to a second drive.

The "forced_video_storage_path_prefix" lines in sage.properties should allow you to set an individual recording path per tuner. You could then use something like SJQ to move those recordings to central NAS at a later time.

I'll answer that one for Greg since I asked him the same thing. Basically it's a usability improvement - sort of a way to help manage multiple users in a home.

Here's the answer he gave me paraphrased a bit:

Each recording has a destination folder as part of its properties. This ensures that the content (in this case) is recorded to the specific folder. This is a way that perons can know everything in that specific folder is OK to delete etc.

He has it set up so that there is a "Dad" folder, a "kid" folder, a "wife" folder and then some others like movies etc. He can then segregate by user to an extent

That's forward-thinking and very smart. This type of family friendly usability addition would be great. It would be nice to see this as an option in the UI when scheduling a recording - and instead of recording to a different path to be able to filter, there could be a way to set up unique Recorded TV groups. The groups would filter by the selection made when setting up the recording.
