Can You Set-up a TV Recording Remotely?

Let's say I'm at work and there's a show I want to record. Can I get on the internet from my work PC and get into my Sage server and set-up a recording?

If so, how?

Thanks,
Greg

Yes, there are 2 ways

1. Install the web server interface customisation. See http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44680

or

2. Install the SageTV Placeshifter software on your work PC. You need a placeshifter license installed on your server too. If you're not the IT department yourself you probably won't be able to do this.

Personally I use the web server interface.

doc,

Thanks for the quick response. It will have to be #1, because my IT dept. wouldn't allow #2. In fact, let say I'm at my brother's house and I need to use his computer to get to my server.........just not practical to bring Placeshifter where ever you go.

Thanks again,
Greg

A third way to do it is by installing the LogMeIn free remote control software. I've been using the LogMeIn free edition for many years. LogMeIn gives you full remote control of the computer. You can get LogMeIn from www.logmein.com. Install the free edition. It will install the pay edition if you are new to LogMeIn, but then revert to the free edition after the trial period if you do not want to pay the annual fee. The free edition of LogMeIn is all you need to remote control you computer from another location anywhere in the world, as long as the function is not being block by someone's firewall.

option 4

install the mobile web interface and do it from your phone - no computer required.

I've been using LogMeIn for years, but whenever I try to use the SageTV UI all I get on the remote screen is a black box. Is there a way to fix this???

Can you carry a USB thumb drive with you? If so, you can carry placeshifter. No install required; runs right off the USB drive. Works like a champ.

What Matt said. I routinely carry a Placeshifter-on-a-stick whenever I travel. I also have the mobile web client on my phone, but for setting up recordings the Placeshifter UI is preferable.

There are specific instructions for setting this up in the Placeshifter subforum.

Thanks...........all good replies. I'm not sure I would use Placeshifter for anything else, so the other options are cheaper (free). If I do decide to stream to remote locations then I would proably get Placeshifter.

Do you have to purchase a Placeshifter license for the server and another for the USB thumb drive to be used at the remote location?

Thanks,
Greg

placeshifter and extender licenses are all "per concurrent user". So you can have a single license, and use it any way you like it, but only one at a time.

You can even install PS to the memory card on your Blackberry.

Just to be clear - you can't run Placeshifter directly on your Blackberry but newer models have a microSD slot. Put an 8GB card in the device and then whenever you plug it into a PC this will act as an external hard drive.
