Do favorites depend on internet connection?

I was out of town for a long weekend. When I was out, one of my network switches died, leaving my SageTV server (running 6.6) cutoff from the internet. Based on logs, the failure happened Fri afternoon, and the first failed EPG update was around 4pm on Fri.

When I returned on Sun evening, and tried to figure out what was going on, I found SageTV recording some manually scheduled programming (NFL games). However, the next thing that was scheduled to record was another manual recording a week away. None of my favorites for the week where scheduled. From the logs:
Code:
Sun 1/24 20:00:00.470 [Scheduler@32dd32dd] MUST SEE FINAL-adapter4-[FA[stationID=24115 NFL Football time=Sun 1/24 18:30:00.000 dur=5:00:00]]
Sun 1/24 20:00:00.470 [Scheduler@32dd32dd] MUST SEE FINAL-adapter5-[]
Sun 1/24 20:00:00.470 [Scheduler@32dd32dd] MUST SEE FINAL-adapter6-[FA[stationID=19219 College Basketball time=Sat 1/30 13:00:00.000 dur=3:00:00]]
When I bypassed the faulty switch, and the EPG started updating, my favorites started to appear:

Code:
Sun 1/24 21:19:12.959 [Scheduler@32dd32dd] MUST SEE FINAL-adapter4-[FA[stationID=24115 NFL Football time=Sun 1/24 18:30:00.000 dur=5:00:00], A[1147805,1147780,"Mercy",21239@0127.20:00,60]]
Sun 1/24 21:19:12.960 [Scheduler@32dd32dd] MUST SEE FINAL-adapter5-[]
Sun 1/24 21:19:12.960 [Scheduler@32dd32dd] MUST SEE FINAL-adapter6-[A[1144926,1144885,"House",24115@0125.20:00,60], A[1144923,1144877,"24",24115@0125.21:00,60], A[1145254,1145204,"Star Trek: The Next Generation",32238@0126.00:00,60], A[1146920,1146882,"American Idol",24115@0126.20:00,60], A[1153665,1147974,"Human Target",24115@0126.21:00,60], A[1147231,1147197,"Star Trek: The Next Generation",32238@0127.00:00,60], A[1153679,1147996,"American Idol",24115@0127.20:00,60], FA[stationID=19219 College Basketball time=Sat 1/30 13:00:00.000 dur=3:00:00]]
Obviously, SageTV had guide data until at least Sat, 1/30. So why didn't it schedule the favorites? If I'd been out of town for another day or two, would I just have missed all my recordings from Mon???

It seems like setting scheduling_lookahead to 14 days, rather than 3 days might work around this. Are there any drawbacks to doing this?

What are you using to record your shows? I had something similar happen to me (the DLS modem flaked out) and all HDHR based recordings were dropped because the network went flaky (and the HDHR is network based).

PCI tuner cards. They were recording the NFL playoffs when I got home, and were not impacted by the network outtage at all.

My favorites for the weekend were recorded, but they were within 72 hours from the last EPG update on Fri. It was the favorites that were outside the 72hr window that were not scheduled until I restored the network connection... So now I'm paranoid that I need to have a successful EPG update at least once every scheduling_lookahead period in order to have favorites get recorded.
