Why is Sage Server using so much memory?

What stuff, for lack of a better word, causes STV server to use in excess of 1GB of memory?

Is it phoenix, metadata, fanart? I have a pretty beefy system but times it becomes sluggish because to much DRAM memory is being used by STV.

Easy enough to disable them and find out.

Mymovies (which I think you use) can get really high on usage because of all the fanart. Especially with multiple extenders in use. Any addin that uses fanart heavily like that will result in memory jumps. That being said mine usually doesn't go above around 760mb on my system.

Cheers

I was moving in that direction but I was hoping someone had already done the work and was willing to share the results.

Looks like I may need to go the 64bit route so that my system can utilize more DRAM.

I would still try what greg suggested. Try disabling my UI and my general smm-api and see if your usage is still spiking. At least you can eliminate that it is nothing else.

At the moment the SMM plugin is disabled and has been for a few weeks. So that is not the memory sink. I do have fanart enabled so that is the next logical thing to disable.

Fanart will consume a lot of memory, in both downloading and displaying it. In phoenix, if scaling is enabled, then the fanart is loaded into memory and then scaled, and written back out disk. So, if you are updating lots of shows, then the act of fectching fanart will eat memory.

I'd like to point out, as I've done on other times... there is huge distinction between a memory leak and simply consuming memory. Java is like the borg of memory. It will consume as much memory as you allocate to it... over time. In essence, when java needs to create a new object, it will simply grab the next available piece of memory. It may, if it has time, run a garbage collection to reclaim memory, but that only reclaims memory for it's internal jvm objects... it does not release memory back to windows/linux OS. If you are seeing from the web ui, or from a stv plugin, that the java heap is always increasing, and never decreasing, to the point where you OutOfMemory errors, then you definately have a memory leak. But if it just rapidly increases to 1g, and you never get an out of memory, then that may be normal, given how lazy java is about reclaiming objects, and it will never release that memory back to the OS.

I would guess that if you removed all fanart plugins, then you'll notice a huge difference in your memory usage.

This question pops up pretty regularly and yes 1GB+ does seem like a large chunk of memory. A couple thing that I have gleamed from past post.

1) Java does not relinquish allocated memory very readily.
2) Sage is streaming video, images, and content to devices on the network so at times having that extra little bit really doesn’t hurt
3)Every Addon you use will probably increment Sage’s memory usage by a bit more.
4) In modern computing and looking at your specs Sage taking a little over 1GB of ram is really not a big deal.

My sage box is dedicated and it has 3 gigs of ram. If I take half of it up using Sage no big deal. Since you have 4GB of ram I would think 1.5 GB taken up by Sage would not be a big deal. Something to look at is you Page File usage. If it’s not growing or being hit then Sage’s ram usage is probably not having adverse affects on your system. I don’t think mine has been used in years and I am hovering at 3 gigs total.

My system is always at 850 to 900 mb of memory dedicated to Sage, I have had to start restarting Sage every few days as it seems to hang. (service control will not even let me stop the service). I believe it is sage running out of allocated memory, but sure what the MAX i can make the heap size to see if that helps it. Its tough to troubleshoot as it takes a few days to build up and by that time I forget that I need to be watching it.

I am hoping to get things fixed up in the next month or so.

Unfortunately my box is not dedicated soley to Sage. Most of the time I have plenty of RAM but when I do RAM intensive stuff, like edit digital photos, make slide shows ect or do a data refresh in MM then my system bogs down because 85% of the physical DRAM is in use. Keep in mind that my system is 32bit and can only utilize 3GB of the 4GB that is installed.
