New plugin idea

I've got an idea for a plugin that I'd like to write, but I'm not sure where I need to start. First of all, are plugins and STVi's the same? Is there a quick and dirty tutorial for creating a plugin...maybe a Hello World for Sage?

If I can't find the information or time to do it myself, I'll pass my idea along to someone else who might wish to implement it.

Depends what you mean by "plugin". STVIs are modifications to the standard UI, i.e. they change what you see on screen and how you interact with Sage. This can include new UI features, or rearrangements of existing menus and features, or just new graphics for the familiar menus.

There's another sort of plugin, though, that operates entirely behind the scenes, without any UI of its own. This includes things like Neil's webserver and XML file generator. (OK, the webserver has a web-based UI, but the point is that it's not an STVI because it doesn't alter the standard Sage UI.)

STVIs are created in Studio, with the option of calling Java subroutines. The other sort of plugin (the sort with no UI) is generally written entirely in Java.

Either way, the place to ask how-to questions about plugin development is the Studio forum.
