First Netflix Streaming Box (hardware) - Will SageTV be next?

Roku just released a $99 piece of hardware to watch Netflix Streamed movies with...

I certainly hope SageTV has something in the works to incorporate this into their Extenders. Would open incredibly large sized doors...

Netflix player from Roku-Slick!

Netflixplayer

And for only $99.

Quote:
The Netflix Player makes it easy to instantly watch movies and TV episodes over the Internet on your living room TV, or anywhere you have a TV and an Internet connection.
Quote:
Movies and TV episodes in your Netflix Instant Queue appear right on your TV screen. Use the included remote control to browse through the items you’ve added to your Instant Queue and pick something to watch — whenever you want. You can even read descriptions and rate movies, right from the comfort of your couch.
Quote:
With standard RCA jacks, S-video, component video, HDMI, and optical audio, the Player will work with virtually any TV, AV receiver, or home theater system.
Only one question-why isn't this the Sage HD Extender?
Maybe Sage can still forge a relationship with them.

I think it's a step in the right direction for Netflix. I like the concept, but I too would hope to see support in existing HTPC software and devices. I also wish there was a way to get new releases on the thing.

Netflix picked up a new employee who has developed a very nice Vista Media Center, Netflix plugin to help them work on interface support for this type of thing. I hope that means they will want to put it into SageTV extenders and many other devices.

I would settle for releases a couple of years old and older, just give us some good content at least!!!!! It doesn't really matter that they have 10,000 titles online, when 99.9% of them went straight to DVD!!

That's the best description of Netflix streaming that I've ever heard

If Roku can sell a $99 box to do Netflix downloads, then I gotta believe any licensing costs are pretty small and I gotta believe the HD Extender has the necessary muscle (especially when paired with a server box) to support the watch now movies. Furthermore, it's pretty clear that Netflix is trying to create an ecosystem of "Netflix-ready" devices. So, I would surely hope SageTV would jump on this bandwagon and add this feature to the HD Extender.

I even wonder if the licensing works the other way such that the box maker gets a tiny kickback for each movie watched on their box. $99 seems pretty darned inexpensive for any electronic device. So Roku's gotta be making the money somewhere.

There is an article at slashdot that says:

"Three more Netflix players are said to be due for release by the end of the year."

http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.../05/20/1927255

Hopefully, one of these will be an update to the SageTV HD Extender! Even though the Roku is cheap, I would prefer to integrate everything in one box, with one user interface.

If Sage were smart (which, they are... <grin>) they would allow the extender to run on it's own for those that only want Netflix capabilities. However, if the user chooses to buy a server...they can do it all through the SageTV interface.

I think that's how they market it...take on the big market through Netflix and get some bleed-through users of SageTV because of it.

I like it. Sell the HD100 as a Netflix branded item that for a cetain $ more, could add on SageTV license as well. I doubt it will happen, but you never know.

I just hope that the HD100 gets the capability and Sage doesn't come out with a new device for it.

Agree. I'd be shocked if they released separate boxes, would not be in their best interest at all (especially from a financial perspective). The hardware is there, it's all software at this point.

Has anyone emailed NetFlix to ask? I can't see that it would hurt.
