Actually, talking about small, impressive amplification, there are some very good tripath (sometimes called class T) amps available in kit form at www.41hz.com. I have heard nothing but good reviews of them, and have a kit that is about to be built for my carpc. I'm not really sure what the status to TriPath is as a company, but the switched mode amplifier does have many merits.. power/size ration being it's biggest..

Does it matter? Don't know about anyone else, but I learned something about amps

The discussion's been great, but hasn't satisfied my curiosity about the original question

I just don't see how this can be beneficial unless you're doing absolutely everything on on the PC. What about game systems. How are those to be hooked up? With the plethora of inputs available on AVR's I just don't see the point of having a full blown amplifier inside the computer.

I can understand the benefits if the included hardware has all the inputs of a full AVR. But without all the inputs the negatives outweigh any kind of advantage.

Or mine! I keep coming back here just to see the response from the OP and nothing.

I also have to agree with Taddeusz....Using a PC as an amp just seems like it would leave much to be desired. Now, if all you had was a small space and could only get one component there, then I guess the PC/AMP/DVR combo would be nice, but then again if you have such a small space, would a built in amplier and surround sound really improve your experience?

Surround sound will improve any experience

Those Yamaha soundbars look pretty sweet if you're space (and not cost) constrained.
