When is Phoneix Coming?

Just curious. . . there are a few bugs in SageMC that I know are unlikely to get fixed now but I certainly can use Sage without SageMC

What is the feature set for Phoneix?

Which bugs? I know Mike just posted a pre-release update to SageMC that took care of a few bugs as well as adding support for the new "system notifications" added in the latest beta version of SageTV.

Updates will still likely continue for SageMC with the minor bug fix here and there.

I wouldn't expect any new information about Phoenix until it is closer to arrival.

1.) The focus issue for the Winamp plugin. Basically you have to tell sage to "play video always on top" in order for the visualizations screen to come up.

2.) Fan Art doesn't show up for albums that are the the same title as the artist (self-titled)

3.) Albums/Songs with the same name end up showing up in multiple places when browsing music. For example both 311 and Madonna have an album called "Music". (And yes all my files are impecably tagged). When I go to either album it shows songs for both albums.

This was a LOL moment for me, it's like asking the powers that be at Sage when v7 is going to be released, and what will be the feature set. No offense intended though..

I'm betting Phoenix will rise and SageTV 7 will arrive about the same time as Windows 7 hits the street.

Just a guess though.

LOL, yeah i here ya hef, but it doesn't hurt to ask. . .

I'm just getting impatient. .. there have been lots of betas but nothing formal yet and I just grow tired have having to continually update plugins, themes, etc.

mainly though I didn't know if phoneix would be coming anytime soon to fix the issues i noted above (although these may not be direct SageMC issues).

I think a better way of putting the question is what develpment stage Phoenix is currently at, alpha or beta? If it's alpha, then I don't expect it anytime soon, at least not in 2009 or even early 2010. If it's beta, then we might see something in late 2009 or early 2010.

Also, who is working on it? How many people are on the team?

Aren't they doing it for free and in their spare time? Hopefully they know we're all appreciative of their efforts

Here are a few tidbits for you:

Regarding SageMC,

The next official release of SageMC will probably occur shortly after SageTV completes this round of betas. That way I'll be able to address any last minute changes to new features after they have been finalized. I will continue to squash bugs as time allows. Also, as you can see with the new system messages screen in the latest pre-release, new features will trickle in. When I announced that SageMC development would be scaled back, that is exactly what I meant. Not abandoned, just scaled back.

Regarding Phoenix,

There is no ETA for Phoenix as of yet. It is a very ambitious project and we have a great team of developers working on it. We are first building up a framework to provide new functionality as has been hinted at in the Phoenix API. Because of that, there aren't any slick looking screen shots to show and there probably won't be for quite some time. As for the actual feature set, I can only say this:

We have top men working on it now.
Who?
Top.......Men.

Aloha,
Mike

Thanks Mike for you comments. One question, is there a way to add ease of plugin(s) management? or is that needed to be done from the sagetv side?

I'm mostly confused about what Phoenix even is. I thought the Phoenix APIs were Phoenix, and nothing else. But, apparently Phoenix is some sort of mostly self-standing application, rather than just a set of APIs that applications will call. I haven't been following this stuff too closely. Do we know roughly what type of program Phoenix is? e.g., a new STV, a video management program, etc.

The official name of Phoenix is 'Phoenix for SageTV'. It is a new user interface (or STV) for SageTV. The Phoenix api's that you have seen are a part of that. The api's were released separately so that everyone could use a common framework for Fan Art. This way when Phoenix (the STV) is released, you will not have to start over again to get fan art working.

Aloha,
Mike

Thanks for that clarification. I'm excited to see what you guys come up with. I think that was a great move to release the fanart-related APIs early. I haven't started using them yet, but I think I will in the relatively near future.
