Are HD PVR recordings in real time?

I saw on a thread somewhere that a fellow was doing "2-pass" HD PVR recordings, and it was taking 11 hours to encode.
Surely I have that mistaken, correct? This device decodes as it records on the fly, no?
At highest quality, what is the gig per hour storage space needed - 6 gigabytes?
thanks

It encodes to h.264 on the fly in hardware. That fellow doing 2 pass encoding was probably transcoding to a different format and that it why it would take 11 hours. Especially f=doing it in 2 passes. I think the highest recording but rate for the HD-PVR is like 13.5 Mbps.

The HD PVR has hardware encoding. Thus it encodes essentially in real time (if you call 1-2 seconds delay real time). The 11 hours sounds more like somebody re-encoded the recording (and this highly depends on CPUs, settings etc.)
And yes 6GB/hour sounds right.

It's only got the hardware to hold a couple seconds of video

Highest possible quality setting is 13.5Mbps ABR (average bitrate). That's 13.5Mbit/sec * 1byte/8bits * 3600sec/1hr ~= 6GByte/hr
