Import Directory issue

Hello,
I have a windows home server that I have all of my DVD rips stored to the WHS storage pool. I have that setup working fine in SageTV to see my DVD's and play them. I wanted to take a drive that is out of the WHS storage pool and put DVD rips on it and be able to access it through SageTV just like my other import location. However, when I go to add that location it doesn't find it when I go to "Network" in the import directory menus. I can specify that directory and it sees the DVD rips in them but when I select that location and run a scan the import directories again, it doesn't pick them up. I'm not sure why it isn't working. Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks,
Chuck

When you setup the drive in WHS, did you create a "share" so that it is visible when you look at the WHS shares? If so, did you set the permissions on that share so that the "user" that is the Sage client has access to that directory?

Thanks for the reply.
I am running SageTV in service mode on a Win 7 PC and my ripped DVD's are on the WHS server. I originally created shares via the WHS console, which is a share only on the pooled drives, to store my ripped DVD's in and that works fine when I set that shared folder up in SageTV. What I want to do now is to have a drive outside the WHS pool of drives and create a share for the entire drive so SageTV can use it as an import directory. Since this drive is not a part of the Pool of drives, I can't create the share via the WHS console like normal. So what I did was create a share for the entire drive that is outside the pool and gave everyone permission to use it. I felt like that should have worked but it didn't. I hope this info helps in determining what I have done wrong.

Thanks,
Chuck

I am currently at work, so I don't remember the actual steps I used at the moment, however I setup a separate non-pooled, non-duplicated drive for my recordings. I will check my setup this evening and confirm my methodology

Grant,
Thanks for checking on this for me. I thought I did it correctly but something certainly is not right. I'm sure it is something I didn't do.

Thanks,
Chuck

Keep in mind that I use two WHS boxes with one dedicated as a SageTV server, so on this box I do not have any pooled drives or duplication. Instead I have a drive for the OS and a second drive I use for recordings. This method is used for my recording directory, however I believe the method could be used for import directories as well.

1 - The drive is added as non-pooled.
2 - The share is not created using the WHS console. In fact, it does NOT show up as a share in the WHS console after creation.
3 - Remote into the server.
4 - Explorer -> Right-click -> Sharing & Security -> Sharing tab
5 - Check Share this foler. Choose New Share -> Provide your share name (desc if wanted etc.) -> Permissions - Everyone.

6 - Check the "View your Windows Firewall settings". Mine is on, but when you go to the Exceptions, it lists SageTV.exe and SageTVService.exe as allowed.

You can then add the path in Sage as \\SERVERNAME\NameofShare.

Grant,
I have done everything except item #6. However, since I am creating this share on my WHS which doesn't have a trace of SageTV on it, how do I set it up in my firewall settings to allow SageTV.exe and SageTVService.exe as allowed?

Thanks,
Chuck

Under the Exceptions tab, when you go to Add, it appears you can navigate the network, log into the other machine and (since i have no shares on my client I'm guessing) view any shared directories to find the .exe to add. Will this work? Not sure lol.. Try sharing the Sage directory on the client and see if this works.

Also, although it sounds like you did #5 correctly, just confirming that you created a New Share as opposed to using the default administrator share..

Thanks again for the help,
I did create a new share for the folder with the dvd on my WHS machine. However, you mention "Try sharing the Sage directory on the client", and I don't have any clients except my HD300's. Did you mean on the SageTV server? I can try that but I'm not sure what that would be necessary. How would this work on a standard OS like Win 7?

Thanks,
Chuck

I have an update. It appears in WHS, or at least my system, that when I created the share and set it up so "Everyone" could view it, it didn't automatically create a "group or user name" called "Everyone" in the Security section. Once I created "Everyone" in the Security section and gave full control, all was as it should be.

Should have WHS automatically created that? I know Win 7 does, but wasn't sure about WHS.

Thanks,
Chuck

WHS should have created its normal shares for you such as Videos, TV Recordings, Photos, Music, etc. You only access the WHS folders thru the console or the Shared folders icon on your PC. Everything is done thru the WHS console including creating the shares. If you do, all the appropriate users and groups will have permissions to it or can be assigned from there. I place my ripped DVDs under folders in the Video shares and the correct users have access to them.

Glad to here you got it running.. what you are seeing is "normal" now that I think about it.

As gplasky said, if you are using the "default" WHS shares created by it through the WHS console, then permissions and groups will be setup correctly. However, in your case you have "gone around" the normal methodology and created a share the old-fashioned way, therefore there is more manual intervention involved in getting the permissions setup. After reading your post on creating the Everyone group, I dimly remember doing that (of course it was almost two years ago) as well on my drive share..

If only I would document every step I use to get things working my life would be sooooo much easier. Of course, I would need a large eraser to delete all the steps that didn't work lol..

Just to confirm, the new share is still "hidden" from the console, correct?

Gerry,
Thanks for your help. However, that is not what I want to do. Actually, that is what I had originally done but I now want to put my DVD rips outside of the WHS pooled drives. I didn't realize that I needed to do the Security step to get the share created with the proper permissions. All is well now though.

Thanks!

Grant,
Thanks for your help with this. I think it helped me get to the bottom of it. I to should write things down but if we did that, life would be too easy!!

Thanks,
Chuck
