HD300 and HDMI splitter?

So I have a potential future house plan which might be able to make use of an HDMI splitter off my HD300. In looking at these devices online, I have read and learned a little about "handshake" issues and CEC and the fact that (if I have this right) some HDMI devices won't allow the signal to go to one display if the other is turned off (both must be on or you get nothing). My understanding is that this is a function of the output device (in my case, the HD300), not the splitter.

So, has anyone tried this with an HD300? Can you split the HDMI out and only have one display on at once?

I don't use the HDMI splitter but I have a HD300 where the HDMI locked at 720P goes to one tv and the composite/audio out is sent to a second 13" CRT TV.

I have an HD200 where I send HDMI to a small LCD TV and composite to an SDTV, but I knew that would work because it's explained in the FAQ:

However, I have not seen any discussion about the HD300's ability to have its signal split to two displays and only one running at once....

its a 1x4 splitter, only 45 bucks, and one of the comments specifically states:

I had tried a passive splitter and discovered that both monitors had to be running for the splitter to work. I would also have to re-plug the cables to get sound in the event that the source signal was off for more than a few minutes. Don't waste your money on one of these black plastic blocks.

The 6193 works, plain and simple. Plug in your source and monitors/TVs and forget it. You can watch any one at a time or any combination. I am using it with a Dish Network receiver and two HDTVs in adjacent rooms. No problems and the picture on both is clean and clear with 1080i.

Although I don't need a 4-way split, I am intending on a powered unit (not the mentioned "black plastic box"). Nonetheless, I have read that even this doesn't always matter - it's apparently purely a function of the device providing the output signal. In other words, that guy who posted that review may have just had devices that couldn't handle the degraded signal (due to the split) and therefore his issue had nothing to do with his output device.

I was just hoping someone here had tried it and had practical knowledge.
