PlaybackException Error

I am trying to install Sage on an old E6400 Dell laptop to use while on vacation next week. I did this last year on the same laptop without issue. But the laptop didn't work when I went to use it so I did a fresh install of Win7 32 bit. Then I installed Sage V7 (to get the MPEG-2 decoders). Then I installed Sage V9.

Whenever I try to playback video I get There was a Playback error in playback. Details: sage.PlabackException: ERROR(-4,0x80040217):There was a problem rendering the video portion of the content for playback.

For some reason V7 was installed in c:\Program Files(x86)\Sagetv and v9 in c:\Program Files\Sagetv.

I nuked the V7 folder in c:\Program Files(x86)\Sagetv and that didn't help.

I then uninstalled and reinstalled and that didn't help. But even when uninstalling it seems that configuration was kept as it found all of my media files on an external hard drive and the configuration was kept.

Any ideas how to fix this problem? This thread: https://forums.sagetv.com/forums/sho...ybackexception discusses something similar and it says:
Quote:
The file lucene-core-3.6.0 to be placed in the JAR subdirectory
The file sage.jar to be put into the sage directory
but I don't know exactly what that means? I do have lucenec-core-3.6.0.jar in the jars folder and sage.jar in the SageTV folder.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Start over and make sure both sagetv installs go into the same folder otherwise you are not likely going to preserve the sage mpeg decoders.

These playback exceptions are often related to issues with DirectShow filters. Make sure you have a codec installed to handle that particular file. You can use GraphStudio to see what filters Windows uses by default for that file. Installing Lav filters as was suggested is probably a good idea as those seem to work well.

Thanks folks - I will try that tomorrow. These errors occur with all files, even H.264. I thought that the licensing issue with Sage V9 was MPEG-2 errors.

edit - And once you download the LAV filters what do you do to configure them?

Your v9 install likely cannot use the v7 decoders as the installer would not have saved them if the install folder was different. LAV may resolve the issue as well but installing v9 in the same location as v7 should get you where you seemed to be aiming to start with.

That is a minor flaw with the Sage v9 installer - it would be nice if it detected the installation location from a previous installation and defaulted to that same location. Unfortunately, it does not do that - it just defaults to the "standard" location.

Agreed. Not sure i will take it on but you could add an issue to github and perhaps someone that wants to learn WIX and understand the installer will take it on...its likely not a huge change.

I encountered this when I worked in my test image for doing the steps from V6 to V9 and ended up using the Options button first to set it to the Sage Install location. Maybe instead of Option button, it just brings up the code to choose the location?

Ok, I have downloaded LAB and set it up to be the MPEG2 decoder but I still get the same error.

Here are my Video/Audio settings:

Video Renderer - EVR
MPEG2 Video Decoder Filter - Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder
VC-1 Video Decoder - Default\
Media Player for non-MPEG Files - SageTV Player: Online, DirectShow: Other

Are those the correct settings?

This is for SageTV V9 on Win7 32 bit on an older laptop. The video card shows up as Standard VGA Graphics Adapter. I tried to load the specific video driver for this Dell E6400 laptop but it says they aren't compatible for some reason.

I am beginning to wonder if the problem is due to issues with the video card. When I run dxdiag it says that DirectDraw Acceleration, Direct3D Acceleration and AGP Texture Acceleration are not available. And I can't seem to get the drivers to install

To get it to use the LAV filters, you would have to change the setting for MPEG2 filter to point at LAV.

Also, you might want to try one of the other renderers like Overlay. Usually EVR is the best choice, but occasionally doesn't work due to some incompatibility with video card / driver / etc.

I got things resolved by installing Win10 and video now plays back correctly - perhaps because it recognized my video card and installed the correct drivers.

I am not 100% sure about MPEG2 but I am not too worried about that for now.
