Firmware upgrade results

My HD MVP is coming today and reading the firmware thread is freaking me out. I am curious about people's results.

It did take awhile to download and apply though. I think it took me close to 20mins. It worked very well though.

Just to let you know: I've seen a few posts about the firmware upgrade getting stuck. I don't know what causes that, but support does have a way for you to recover if the unit stops working.

The biggest thing to remember is to not turn the unit off while it is upgrading and that the screen does flash for a while during the upgrade -- this is normal.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the info. It is good to get this from an "official" source.

Is there any chance that the recovery process could be posted here somewhere, or will we have to wait for a response directly from support? I am just eager to get my extender up and running .

Thanks,
Jesse

Mine upgraded just fine. My only complaint is it was very slow process, took about 15 minutes. The 12/07 firmware is about 6Mb. Downloading it is fast, but when flashing, it goes at the speed of a 56K modem, about 5k/sec. So it takes about 14 minutes to transfer the entire 6Mb. But honestly, 15 minutes is not that bad, I'm only complaining because I was anxious to use the extender.

Worked like a charm. Got caught up on the threads I'm watching while it did it's thing.

Edit: I do get odd green highlights across the screen when I try to set the "Current" resolution under HDMI in the firmware settings to 1080p. any thoughts on this?

mine upgraded fine, never even hesitated, just slowly but inevitably counted up to 100% and then auto rebooted.

My upgrade went as described above - fast download, incredibly slow flashing. However, mine got stuck at the "Rebooting..." screen and hung there. After 5 or so minutes, I eventually power-cycled the box and it came up fine. I was somewhat nervous about turning it off and back on, but since it was complete it worked fine.

For the person who voted that the unit is bricked but didn't post a reply: be sure to contact support. If you don't hear back from them by the end of the day tomorrow, send me a PM & I can make sure the request got through.

I upgraded the firmware without any issues. Before that it woudn't play my mp4 files and I would get sage.PlaybackException. After that it plays the mp4s but still not my homemade movies.

The only issue I had is after it downloaded, flashed and verified it said it was rebooting. Never did. Just sat on the screen. After a period of time I had to power it off-power it on and all was well. Flashing was a little slow IMHO but acceptable.

I had a similar issue ... update went ok till 96% .. it got stuck. I waited for some time (reading this forum) then I decided to press the up arrow on the remote and it went back to the settings screen ??? So I started the update again ... this time it went all the way but got stuck at the reboot. I then powered off and all was well with new firmware .... go figure.

Mine upgraded successfully but I did get the "Rebooting" screen for a while so I just turned the extender off and then back on. And everything worked fine.

I had the exact same thing.

I'm not sure if the firmware server is on the same server as the forums, but yesterday when I got my HD extender I couldn't update the firmware most of the afternoon, I also couldn't reach the forums for the same period of hours. Once the forums came back up I tried updating the firmware and it worked fine.

Flashed two units last night

I successfully flashed two units last night. Both had a dramatic pause when writing (50%) mark that had me concerned. The unit connected via component had a screen flash a couple times, whereas the HDMI unit had consistent display output. I just walked away from the units and checked intermittently, total time was probably in the 30 minute range for the process.

Just got my extender last night. I was a little concerned after hearing about some people having upgrade issues. Initially my extender couldn't connect to the server. I tried a second time after rebooting the extender and it successfully downloaded and updated the firmware.

Other than some H.264 playback issues that I'm sure will be corrected I am quite pleased with it. Very much worth the $200!

The flash update took 20mins or so, which concerned me because i work with parts that have 512KB flashes and they can be erased and reprogrammed in less than 6 seconds. If there wasn't a % done indicator I would have assume it was broken. I can't imagine why it takes 20 mins.

Also, after the update, the status page did not indicate that the new firmware was installed. I had to turn off the unit and then back on to see the correct version.

One problem with the setup process is that if you have your server set to go, you only have 5 seconds to press enter on the remote to stop it from booting. It takes that long to position the remote so the box can recognize it.

Is there a way to get to the setup screen once booted?

lol, my wife laughed at me because after two failed attempts to get select recognized from the couch, i jumped up off the couch and got in my "high noon" pose as it rebooted the third time and quick drew the remote right up to the box to make sure I won =)
