Fixed missing 5 min

And, there are a couple beta files you should be using with the 2250:

SageTV Beta for Windows: DShowCapture.dll and TSSplitter.ax

- Andy
Appears to have worked like a charm! I had the beta files already installed but had failed to change the seeker/fast_mux_switch=false setting since I was new to sageTV at the time I did the fix and had no idea where the properties were (it was easy to find!) Thanks Andy!

5 minutes... how about 40

This is the 2nd NASCAR race on ABC that's started later than my padding. By that I mean I've got an extra 40min of red at the start of the program than I should. There are also 6 0MB files for the show. The 7th finally started recording and that one has issues. I can't seem to skip to "Live" which is a couple of minutes past the last commercial. Soon as I can get the service shut down I'm going to install the latest release for the HDHR and see if there might be a conflict w/ the new tssplitter.

No other recordings seem to have had issues this week. just this one (two).

I was hoping that the latest beta would fix this, but it still occurs. even with the latest beta I still occasionally see the 5 minute bug sometimes, if the circumstances are correct, and yes the registry trick has been applied.

It doesn't happen every time, but say that at 7pm you have two or more recordings scheduled to start, and you are currently watching one of the channels that will be recorded next. when 7 hits, that channel will go dark for 2-7 minutes, and the other recording will go as planned. It happens very rarely (maybe once a month), so I've never been able to capture enough info other than this for a problem report, except that if you are lucky enough to be watching a upcoming recording channel on a tuner that sage wants to use to record something else, then the black out never occurs and both recordings will go on as planned.

I finally got this corrected on my machine, by replacing the mpdemux.ax and dshowcapture.dll, and tsplitter.ax files with the beta versions and set the seeker/fast_mux=false in the properties file. I had to set this on both the client and the server.

No more problems with back to back recordings or watching live tv. It has completely cured the problems for me. When watching live tv, when the program would change from one to another the video would freeze. The only way to get around it was to press stop on the remote and then go into the guide and click watch on the new program and then all would be fine until the next program change. When recording back to back programs on the same channel, the first five minutes would always be missing. The strange thing is this never showed in the logs.

Anyway, replacing the files and setting the switch fixed all of it.

I've noticed that I'm sometimes experiencing the missing 5 minute issue with my r5000 units. I already have the seeker/fast_mux=false setting and was wondering if the beta files do anthing for these units. I'm running v6.4.8 and this is when I started noticing it happen every few days.

I just upgraded to v6.5 today and tonight, I lost the first 5 minutes of 24. I've made the changes recommended in this thread.

Does anyone at SageTV actually know what's causing this and how to fix this? This is extremely annoying...

I know this is no help, but I've always felt like the root cause of this is poor signal quality. I never had problems on my system until RCN rearranged the QAM stations (and in the process took bandwidth away from them). With the lower signal quality on RCN's rearranged lineup, I used to get this issue all the time. About 6 months ago, I switched to Verizon Fios (where the signal quality is perfect) and I have never seen this problem again.

It's almost like if the signal is bad at the moment when Sage tries to tune, then it is unable to lock on to the channel (or whatever) and so tries to retune again after 5 minutes.

I know this is anecdotal (and probably not terribly helpful), but I thought I would weigh in with my experience.

The only thing I can get from it is that it has something to do with multiple recordings starting at the same time. One surefire way that I recently figured out triggered it was if say you have two digital recordings starting at the same time, and you happen to to be watching one of the channels that are set to record, except you are using a tuner that the program wants to use to record another show. The chances are high that when its showtime, the new recording will go black. It dosn't matter if you tell it to switch the channel on time, or stay where it is, one of the shows will lose 5 minutes, typically the one you are watching. I got around that by making sure I wasn't watching anything before a recording starts.

Now, I added a 3rd hvr-1600, and the problem only occurs when three digital recordings are starting at the same time. Does not matter if a show is being watched or not. Just like the previous its not a 100% guarantee that it will occur, but it seems to always be certain shows, like tonight, I'm almost 100% certain that it will lose 5 minutes of the show "Life" I'm going to enable the logging feature, and hopefully it will show something interesting.

Did you notice if the JVM memory was max out at the time. I had the issue before, and I happened to stumble on that it was out of memory at the time that the recordings were missing the beginning...

Thanks,
Jeff

That's something I hope the log will pick up. I won't be around when it happens, The only other day I can check that I can typically expect it to happen is Monday where it seems to always fails on Heroes (FOX and CBS are fine) The only other thing I can think of is something with the hvr-1600 as most of the posts seem to have that in common.

Morning edit: Crap for once it didn't happen! Good that it didn't but its almost like crying wolf. Well, this morning since jphipps brought it up I'm going to try to up the JVM heap to see if it does it anytime next week. I'll bump it if anything happens.

I dont think JVM memory is a problem. I've got 3GB of Memory on the machine and I changed the JVM heap to 512MB. That being said, I work for a company that makes software for monitoring Java based applications. If I can figure out where Java is called in a config file, I can add our "hook" into the JVM to do some deep level monitoring at the code level...

This hasn't happened in months, but since I upgraded to 6.5, this has happened twice this week. Coincidence? Maybe.

Are the "beta" drivers referred to in the earlier part of this thread now the drivers shipping with 6.5?

Are you talking about the directshow dll? Yes, that's been in for a while.

I forgot that Thursday is also a busy night and just noticed that it happened yesterday on Grey's Anatomy, unfortunately I wasn't logging so I missed it. At least I don't think it a JVM memory leak, Its kind of high currently at 311mb/409mb/616mb (I set the registry tag to 592mb) but that may be because I was placeshifting to check currently. I'll keep an eye on it Monday to see how it is during a recording monday along with a log. I swear I'm going to get this down.

Man, I can not believe this is still a problem!!

Hello Mcfly (Sage)!!

I'm 99% the issue for me is reception, when I used the HDHR on comcast for QAM I never get it; however, I get it completely randomly on my hvr-1600 with antennas.

At the least, why in the freaking world will Sage wait 5 min to try to retune it? Can I change this? It would be a great way to confirm it...

I've been working with them on this for the past couple of weeks. Its seems to be pretty tough to nail down. Just realize they are aware and its not being ignored.

Right, but if you look at this thread it stated in 1/2008. Myself and others had submitted reports on it probably 6 months before that!

At the least I would have expected a change to make it retune in less than 5 min increments!!

Exclamation First 5 min Missing -- debug log capture

I know there is a very old thread on this, but I figured I'd start a new one because now I have a log file to show. Last night, Lost and American Idol were both set to record at 9pm on each of my HVR-1600s. American Idol recorded fine, but Lost was missing the first 5 minutes. Since I had debug logging enabled, here is the output. I hope someone can finally pinpoint the issue. If it is a reception issue, then why does Sage wait 5 minutes to try again?

Did you know you can attach zipped files, or even text files if they aren't too large, instead of simply trying to post a log inline? I put [code] tags around the text so your post wasn't so long.

Have you checked this FAQ:

My recordings are missing the first 5 minutes. How do I fix that?

Yeh. I've tried everything in those FAQ's. I've been dealing with this issue on and off for quite a while.

Do the logs indicate the problem?
