Encoder in Use

I need help with this scenario please.

My configuration is SageTV with 1 capture card and 3 clients. My son will start watching live tv on the client in his room and leave and forget to stop watching the show. I go to my tv and go to watch a show and get an error message that the server is unable to change channels because the encoder is in use watching live tv.

My delima is that I have to get up and go to his room and shut down the client. Is there any way to stop his client from watching live TV from the server? Is there an option somewhere I can set that lets me override another connection? A mod maybe?

Thanks

I think you have a couple options:

1) teach your son to hit stop before turning off TV
2) add the sleep timer. I don't use it (yet) so I don't know if you can have it automatically set for 2 hours, etc.
3) the webserver add-on gives you the option to turn off MVPs remotely. I use the webserver all the time, but have never tried controlling my MVPs with it.

Thanks for the reply.

I also use the web server but didn't think I could stop someone from watching Live TV. I will take a look and give it a try.

Yes, teaching him would be the best way, but my wife does it once in a while also and there is no teaching her.

I now have a harmony 555 remote for my setup, and have programmed it with the MVP codes for controlling Sage... It is very good for this sort of thing because instead of only controlling certain devices at a single time, you set it up with 'activities', eg:

Watch Sage -- power on TV, switch to Sage input, power on MVP.
Listen to Sage music = power on TV, mute TV, power on Amp, switch Amp input to TV output...
Listen to CD=power on CD, power on Amp, Switch Amp to CD input
etc...
Listen to Radio=power on amp, tuner, switch amp to tuner input.
Watch DVD = power on TV, switch to DVD input, power on DVD.

So when you use the power off button on the remote, or even if you switch activityu it powers off everything that was powered on: TV, MVP, Amp, CD, DVD etc...

The WAF went up also because we now only have 1 remote instead of 7!

kkeller20,

What I did was install Nielm's webserver on all my clients. I created a batchfile using wget to stop the clients. I then created a menuitem in My Sage menu to run it.

Stopden.bat
c:\wget\wget.exe --delete-after "http://DenClient:8081/sage/SageCommand?context=SAGETV_PROCESS_LOCAL_UI&command=Stop"
exit

See atached

One approach would be to install one of the multitude of free VNC systems on your machines (yours and your son's). I use UltraVNC, but there are many. This will allow you to jump on his machine from yours and kill the client without leaving your easy chair. I don't know your son's age, but if he's young enough that monitoring his computer usage might be a good idea, VNC will also allow you to passively monitor his desktop whenever you want to. VNC servers and viewers are available for many OS's on many architectures.

Or add another capture card

I have the same problem with a media extender in the bedroom and Server in the living room. My wife/kidz shut the TV off connected to the server but the tuner is still engaged and won't allow me to switch from the extender in the bedroom.

Thanks guys for the advice. I'm going to give wget a try as I really like that menu entry.

Thanks again all. I really appreciate it.
