Problem with metadata for PlayOn files w/ updated timestamp

I know there is probably a simple explanation for this but I am at my wit's end using my limited knowledge to figure this out. Basically to keep this as simple as possible, the gist of it is this:

Every morning when the PlayOn Queue Importer does it's thing, I lose all metadata for any existing shows in the PlayOn queue directory. Any new playon shows to the queue gets the metadata correctly...until the next day when it is no longer new, then the metadata is lost.

I just don't know if my problem lies with a specific setting I set, BMT, EP's PlayOn plug-in, or Sage itself. I'm inclined to think that it is something I've inadvertently set in BMT (or Sage) so I'm posting here.

Below is the Sage log:

Tue 4/5 5:42:03.057 [LibraryImporter@a64f6e] Seeker has finished the library import scan.
Of the several items found in my PlayOn directory, only one item is new...The Daily Show with Jon Stewart S16E45.m4v. The rest of the items already existed, Sage saw a change in the timestamp, and (according to the log) it reimported the metadata. I would think this is all working as expected.

This is from the phoenix-metadata.log file:

Code:
2011-04-05 05:42:02,792 - AUTO; MEDIA; C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV\SageOnlineServicesEXEs\UPnPBrowser\PlayOn\TV\The Daily Show with Jon Stewart\Season 16\The Daily Show with Jon Stewart S16E45.m4v; The Daily Show with Jon Stewart S16E45; 2815907
2011-04-05 05:42:37,935 - UPDATE; C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV\SageOnlineServicesEXEs\UPnPBrowser\PlayOn\TV\The Daily Show with Jon Stewart\Season 16\The Daily Show with Jon Stewart S16E45.m4v; The Daily Show with Jon Stewart; TV; S16; E45; MF2815907; 2815907
Indicating BMT found one new show and added the metadata for it. Again, I would think this would be as expected.

So where did my metadata go for my other shows? Sage doesn't show it and when I open BMT and select the "Missing Metadata" from the Browse tab, every PlayOn item is returned except The Daily Show with Jon Stewart S16E45. If I run "Update Metadata..." from here, BMT finds the metadata fine and updates it and everything is hunky-dory. Until tomorrow when everything is lost again. Its like Groundhog Day...

Does anyone have experience with an issue like this? Any ideas on what setting could be ignoring updated files? Any help is much appreciated.

I'd check to make sure that you have .properties enabled in sagetv. YOu can verify/enable this through the web ui. (Configure -> SageTV -> Metadata Settings -> Update .properties when changed)

If sagetv does try to re-import the fiels, and the .properties exists, then at least you'll retain the metadata. Otherwise, it gets lost, if sage decides to re-import the files.

Many people don't like the .properties, but they are important, if you want sagetv to remember your metadata during a re-import.

Yes! That sounds right. Several months ago, I turned off the .properties file generation. No real reason, I just remember reading somewhere that it wasn't necessary. It appears that was incorrect.

The odd thing is that I've been using EP's PlayOn Importer for a while and didn't start seeing this until very recently. Perhaps prior to his latest plugin update, he wasn't overwriting (or deleting and reimporting) files that already existed? Or maby I did something else differently...who knows.. I'm a compulsive tinkerer. No matter...if this fixes my problem I'll be a happy camper.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

That fixed the problem. I now retain the metadata the following day. Thank you!

But now, the metadata always shows the relative path in the title for the updated shows. So, for instance, in Sage now, I've got two groupings for The Jon Stewart Show, one that is "TV/The Daily Show with Jon Stewart/Season 16/The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and a single episode that is just "The Daily Show with John Stewart". The single episode that is displaying correctly is new, but when updated tomorrow, it will get the relative path along with the rest.

In the BMT settings, I have "Prefix Videos with Relative path" unchecked so I don't know why it is doing this. If Sage is reimporting the metadata from the .properties file, is there something I need to change in the Sage properties?

Excellent timing indeed.

So if I understand correctly, the relative path is something that Sage adds to the metadata. BMT actually strips it off (if you choose to do so). So when BMT scrapes the show info to begin with, it includes just the title, but when Sage re-imports the data from the .properties file, since to Sage the relative path is a part of the title, it gets added back. Is that about right?

So does anyone know if there is a property that can be set in Sage so that it treats "updated" media (changed timestamp) as new so that bmt can re-retrieve the metadata rather than having Sage get it from the .properties file?

If you update the timestamp on the mediafile, then sagetv will re-import it. This should trigger bmt as well. But if you do have a .properties file, then bmt will skip it anyways.

I guess I'm confused then since that takes me back to my original problem. I originally had it so the .properties file wasn't generated and bmt was not being triggered (from original post).

I'm having the exact same issue! Wow, it was driving me completely crazy until I noticed the pattern where everything looked great when I'd go to bed (pre-PlayOn importer update) and then would be back to having the relative path displayed in the morning (post update).

Any answers as to how to eliminate this problem? I'm not having issues retaining metadata for episodes, but the relative path issue is a major negative impact to my browsing/viewing experience (WAF).

This is a case where BMT updates the file (and .properties may be generated, which is OK) but later something updates the timestamp on the file and as a result, sagetv tries to reload the metadata for that item. Since there is a .properties then sagetv will use that, but sagetv also will append the relative path to the title I guess you need to figure out why sagetv is re-importing the file... is the does the playon importer update the timestamp on file even if they've been imported?

Yeah, my plugin is unintentionally touching the files for some reason, i'll look into it this weekend. Although, I don't understand why that would cause metadata to get lost?

I don't think it causes metadata to get lost. What happens is that when sagetv re-imports the file, it uses the existing .properties (that was created as a side effect of bmt looking up metadata), and then it appends a relative path to the Title. So all the existing metadata is still there, but the Title now has a relative path. Because BMT does not re-process a file with a .properties, then it never gets a chance to "fix" the title, which is something that bmt would do normally. I hope that better explains what is happening.

Correct. When I bring up one of the PlayOn imported items in BMT, all the metadata looks as it should with the exception of the "Show Title" and "Episode Name" fields.
