STV Import: Imdb Search Interface (7 Jul 2008 v6.10)

This is a module which can search for and display information from the Internet Movie Data Base.







This adds a ''IMDB Search'' item to the Options popup to search for information on a program, and you can also search for anything/anyone using an on-screen keyboard.

Nielm, I dont know how you do it. You single-handledly put SageTV 3.0 on steriods with all your plug-ins.

have you noticed the secret extra feature yet?
If a show has actors, do a search by person....

At first, I thought this plug-in was going to be completely segregated from the rest of SageTV (which could only be accessed by adding a dynamic menu item to a menu). To me, that wasn't that useful. All I got was an empty field where I could do a search; IF i knew how to spell the name of the actor or movie.

However, last night I stumbled onto a couple of exteremely useful features which I think are brand new and "secret" in this release. It looks like this plug-in nicely integrates into the latest version of SageTV 3.0.13 very well!

With the new SageTV 3.0.13, there's a new popup menu which can be accessed when selecting a movie from the program guide; I now have "IMDB Search for Title" and "Search for Person" included in this brand new popup!

This plug-in is so good (with it's brand new SageTV 3.0.13 integrated features), it should be part of the SageTV 3.0.x Final Retail; at least as a unsupported secret feature.

I cant wait to show my friends and ask them, "Can your Tivo do this?" LOL!

The search for person is HUGE! Specifically for searching guest stars who otherwise wouldnt' show up in the main IMDB page for a tv show.

Nielm, you forgot one thing... To add the actor's "movie" name (as shown in IMDB's cast). Some people might not know the actor's name and only know the name they went by in the TV show or movie.

Currently, it lists only the actors. It would be a relatively easy change to also include the actor's movie name

For example, when I clicked on "Search for Person" for Family Guy cartoon, I had no idea which actor played as "Peter Griffin".

So instead of only showing:

Seth MacFarlane

It would show:

Seth MacFarlane (Peter Griffin/Brian Griffin/Stewie Griffin...)

Just a helpful suggestion

The problem is that the credit information (who played what character) isn't available in the Show data. He would have to do a preliminary show lookup, then pull all the actors/characters (Hmmm, for a long running show, this could be hundreds of names), then build the actor menu from that.

Not impossible, but improbable.

I should have known that if it was relatively easy, you would have already done it

I just figured since it was pretty quick for me to manually search by title, then show the IMDB cast list, it would be even quicker to pull the data automatically.

Just extract the files onto your existing installation. Replace old files. Just make sure sagetvservice.exe and sagetv.exe aren't in memory. That's it.

I had 3.3 installed and working fine. I downloaded, unzipped and copied the STVs and JARs folders over.

Selected it in my menu, it came up with the search screen. I put int "wayne" (used as a test search for John Wayne), it responds with is it a person, etc. I selct yes and it comes up with that error.

Normally plugin installs work with Sage running, but for the heck of it I tried it again with Sage closed. Same thing.

I then tried to reinstall it through Detailed Setup > Advanced > Import SageTV Application Package (.STVi File) ... Same results ...


Got me??
