IPTV Support?

I recently came across this -

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/SureWest_IPTV

It explains how to set up MythTV to record IPTV with/o a STB by setting up a NIC to mimic the network settings of the STB. It is specific to Surewest's IPTV service and Gentoo Linux, but may work for other IPTV services? AT&T U-Verse maybe? Surewest is available in my area so that is what peaked my interest.

Wonder if this method could work to bring IPTV into SageTV? Unfortunately I don't have Surewest or AT&T U-Verse to do any testing.

If this works would seem you wouldn't need HDPVR nor any kind of blaster to change Channels, seems changing channels is port based.

you'd have to completely change how sage works I think (or add to it more likely)

basically you're getting your sage box to join multicast streams, and just record the bitstream to a file

I've done it using VLC, it's pretty simple

it's integrating it with an EPG and all the other niceties of sage that would take some time

If this can go through VLC then shouldn't you be able to have VLC stream it and pick up the stream in Sage with the Sage web radio and tv encoder?

I'm curious and ignorant, does the HDHR stream IPTV to SageTV?

the problem is how do you change channels via sage?

you somehow have to map the epg to the multicast group

Oh yeah - I guess that would be useful.

Network encoder

I'm wondering if this is something that could be setup using a network encoder. Once you have something dumping the stream to the file system I think sage just plays the file. Doesn't it?

Perhaps some of the code from GraphRecorder would help.

again, playing the file is super simple

it's getting the epg to talk to the multicast that's the task

i don't think it's crazy hard either

just map an ip&port to a channel number in EPG and that should be it

The webfeedencoder plugin handles all of this within the plugin. Take a look at it and see. No need to reinvent the wheel.
