Update the UI

Over in the Open Source thread Stuckless made a comment that "Making the UI look newer doesn't require the source".
I would love to update the UI. I don't even want to change any of the functionality or position of elements.
Just change some of the font colors, background colors, highlight colors, etc.
Can someone point me in the right direction.
I took a quick look at Phoenix, but I'm not sure if that even works anymore.
I also looked at the STV7 xml file, but it's a bit overwhelming.
Thanx!

Keep in mind, I am not a STV developer, but based on your question, if all you want to do is update images/colors, then check out the STVs folder and then the SageTV7 folder (that is the default skin).

In there you'll see LOTS of png/jpg files, so they can easily be changed. And there is a Themes folder. In the Themes folder you'll see a Standard folder and in there are 100s of images and a theme.properties file. The .properties is where you can set colors, etc.

So, without touching the STV xml file, you can change the colors and images. Typically you only need to change the STV xml if you want to add features or phsically move things around.

I think the "proper" thing to do is to copy the Standard theme into a new directory, and then make you changes as a new theme directory. (not sure how you select it, but someone can chime in with that).

As for Phoenix... it's still used I use it every day.

Sean.

Sean

Thanx for the quick reply.
I'm not so much concerned about images (pngs, etc) as I am about the button labels, colors and highlight, etc.
I would like to change the "recordings menu" labels and show descriptions, background colors, for example.
Perhaps that's in the theme.properties file? I'll have a look at that.
I will also take another look at Phoenix.
The first time I tried it the only screen that worked for me was the EPG.
Obviously I have something fouled up.

You should not edit the .xml file directly. All of the changes you want to make should be done using Studio which comes with any licensed version of Sage TV. Take a look at the Studio subforum for info, there is a lot there!

OK, so the Studio thing looks like it's gonna take a lot of time and energy to master.
I'm willing to get involved with it, if it's what I really need to do what I want.

However, before I do, it would be much appreciated if someone would guide me through one simple change, to see if I'm on the right track for what I want to do.

For example, what are the necessary steps to change the color (currently white) of the TV Recordings listings to say a bright yellow.

I'm working with the basic SageTV7.XML file.

You do not need to use Studio for that just look in the C:\Program Files (x86)\SageTV\SageTV\STVs\SageTV7\Themes\Standard folder for theme.properties and change colors there.
You can make a copy of the standard folder name it what you want ... edit it them load it up in SageTv.

You can use http://www.iconico.com/download.aspx?app=ColorPic

You can use http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_colorpicker.asp to get the codes for your colors.

example.
Code:
# Text colors and alphas to go with the malore button
ColorValue/gMaloreButtonNormalColor=# Text colors and alphas to go with the malore button
ColorValue/gMaloreButtonNormalColor=0xF7F7F7
ColorValue/gMaloreButtonNormalColorNew=0x66ff66
ColorValue/gMaloreButtonNormalColorWatched=0xC7C7C7
#ColorValue/gMaloreButtonNormalColorWatched=0x999999
ColorValue/gMaloreButtonNormalColorNew=0x66ff66
ColorValue/gMaloreButtonNormalColorWatched=0xC7C7C7
#ColorValue/gMaloreButtonNormalColorWatched=0x999999

Thanx for your help.
I did some work and I believe what you suggested is going to give me what I need.

Now all I need is for someone to write the code for native support of cable card tuners
