Can't connect with Placeshifter remotely

I get an error "The SageTV Placeshifter is unable to connect to the specified SageTV Media Center Server..."
The connectivity test on the Media Center configuration wizard shows that my router is configured correctly for access. I can connect from another computer on the network using the machine name. But I cannot connect from an outside location. I have configured my router to allow port 31099 for both UDP and TCP, and it still doesn't work. And as I said the connectivity test from the SageTV server passes. If I remove that port 31099 config from the router it fails. So I have the right port configured. What did I miss?
Many thanks!

Eldred

I can't even telnet from the inside, but I'm not sure I have the right syntax. I type "telnet 192.168.1.102 31099" from a command prompt. All I get is a blinking cursor for about 20-30 seconds, then it drops back to a c: prompt. What *should* show up? I can ping the system with no problem. Thanks.

Are you using the IP that your ISP is supplying your router? Not the private IP you used internally.

On your server or workstation in your network try going to www.canyouseeme.org and enter port 31099 to test it to make sure it is open on your router.

One more thing - a lot of cable modems these days have their own routers so if you have your own router in addition to your modem-router then you either need to put your modem in bridge mode or you need to forward your modem's port to your router's port and finally to the workstation. I like having my own router so I set a dedicated IP for my router since at present I decided not to have my modem in bridge mode. But, that's only an issue if canyouseeme.org fails to detect that the port is open.
